Shared Space DfT Research. Initial findings published

The Department for Transport are undertaking a two year research exercise into the potential for shared space principles to contribute to improvements in quality in street design in the UK. The research is being undertaken by MVA Consultants, with input from a broad-based Steering Group.
The first phase report has now been published on the DfT's website, and concludes that there is a robust case for shared space to be developed further, especially for streets with lower traffic volumes. The report concludes that there is no evidence to suggest that shared space reduces safety for street users, although it recognizes the concerns that come with closer integration of traffic into the social and civic functions of streets and public spaces. Gaps in our existing knowledge are identified, and the report sets out areas for further research.
