Ashford Transformation wins another major award
4th February 2010
The RTPI has awarded the Ashford Shared Space project a major award for regeneration. The scheme, completed in October 2008, has transormed the former one-way, three lane race-track surrounding the town centre into a distinctive and civilised environment for pedestrians, cyclists and low-speed traffic.
The scheme has been visited over the past year by huge numbers of interested parties from other towns and cities facing similar problems of how to civilise the bleak inner ring roads that blight the economy of many market centres. Although far from complete, the project remains the largest demonstration of the potential for combining traffic movement with the creation of a coherent set of streetscapes.
The award is well deserved by Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council, and for Whitelaw Turkington and other members of the design team involved
